Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn held his second public meeting in Llanelli with Deputy Chief Constable Darren Davies last night (12/12/17).
In bridging the link between the communities and policing, Dafydd Llywelyn is offering the opportunity for members of the public to come and speak with him and a Chief Officer. Last night’s meeting held in the Selwyn Samuel Centre was the latest in the round of meetings planned across the Dyfed-Powys area.
Residents from across Llanelli came along to hear the Commissioner and Deputy Chief Constable talk about policing in the local area. Open and honest discussions were held about issues of concern locally including substance misuse, anti-social behaviour and the impact these have on our communities.
Police Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn said he was grateful to those that came along on such a cold and gloomy evening in December. He added that these meetings provide senior leaders with a true understanding of the real issues of concern to local residents. “It’s important that we don’t assume what matters affect local residents from performance data and statistics alone. Policing by consent can only take place, if we work closely with our communities and listen to their views. Multi–agency working is crucial to providing a tailored response to address community concern. But fundamentally, those concerns must be understood fully by the police and our partners. Holding meetings such as these provide another mechanism to allow for that.
Deputy Chief Constable Darren Davies felt this innovative approach by Police Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn was a positive development. He was pleased to attend Llanelli having served as a Police Constable there in 1988-93 before moving onto other roles. He said “Dyfed-Powys police care about our communities. The discussions held had raised some matters that will be looked into further. The views given by those who attended has provided myself and the operational Chief Inspector for Carmarthenshire, insight into the thoughts and feelings of residents of Llanelli.
DCC Davies said “Llanelli is a medium sized town with a sizeable population. There are areas within the town and surrounding wards that receive enhanced support from services when required. This meeting has brought home the importance of continuing to engage with residents, business and partners so we work from a truly informed position.
