World Children’s Day: How Young People Contribute to Policing in Dyfed-Powys

The 20^{th of} November 2025, marks World Children’s Day. The theme this year is ‘inclusion, for every child’. UNICEF recognises World Children’s Day as acknowledges and highlights the rights of children across the world. The day stands to amplify children and young people’s voices on their rights and opinions.

In December 2018, Police and Crime Commissioner, Dafydd Llywelyn, created a Youth Ambassador Schemes for 14-25 years old living, studying or working in the Dyfed-Powys area. The Youth Ambassador Scheme gives young people a voice and platform to raise awareness of current issues and contribute to tackling problems faced by youth. The Youth Ambassadors help shape the future of policing.

What do the Youth Ambassadors do?

• Help us identify what are young people’s priorities
• Create exciting campaigns that will raise awareness of young people’s priorities
• Consult with young people on policing and crime issues locally and feedback to the Police and Crime Commissioner
• Support the Police and Crime Commissioner with his scrutiny work by attending some meetings to challenge decisions, provide recommendations, and influence change for the benefit of young people in our area.

Dafydd Llywelyn, PCC, says:

“The Youth Ambassador Scheme is an opportunity for young people to give their opinion on policing and current issues faced by their peers in the communities of Dyfed-Powys. Young people’s voices are often under-represented and heard, this scheme ensures their voices are heard and builds relationships between people and young people.”

Young people can gain skills, knowledge and experience which they can apply to all aspects of their lives and enhance their CV. Volunteering is flexible and can work around the current busy schedules or education commitments of young people. The ambassadors work alongside key decision makers, peers and local communities - Be heard, Make positive change.
