Dafydd Llywelyn and a hardy group of officers have today embarked on their gruelling 496 mile cycle ride, where they will visit every police station in the force area. They set off bright and early to take on the challenge which will take five days.
He is accompanied today by Chief Inspector Matt Scrase, PC Mark Thomas, Sergeant Jonny Griffiths, Chief Inspector Mark McSweeney, Inspector Gareth Thomas, Sergeant Reuben Palin and Sergeant Richard Fallows. The Commissioner and each officer have all agreed to give up their own time to endure up to 12 hours a day in the saddle, and will also be raising money for Safer Dyfed-Powys Diogel.
One of the priorities in the Commissioner’s Police and Crime Plan is to keep our communities safe. In support of this, he has pledged to promote and support a range of crime prevention projects. Safer Dyfed-Powys Diogel will distribute and generate funds to be invested into the local community with the aim of crime prevention and reducing the fear of crime. Initially, any grants awarded within the charity’s first year will predominantly focus on local youth projects.
Dafydd Llywelyn said: “I’m a keen cyclist, and have enjoyed building up to this event by cycling to and from work regularly. I was excited to get started this morning, and it was a bonus that the sun was out for us.
“I’m so grateful to the officers who, like me, are giving up their own time to support this and take part. It’s an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for the charity, and to support my pledge to keep communities safe, through promotion and a range of crime prevention projects.
“The first day is going well, and we’ve already got lots of miles in the saddle. The prospect of cycling up to 12 hours a day is a little daunting obviously, but so far so good, and I’m looking forward to the challenge the rest of this week.”
